Fractional CIO vs. MSP

Your MSP keeps systems running. A fractional CIO makes sure the business is investing in the right systems, in the right order, with someone accountable for the decisions.

Independent technology leadership for growing businesses
You do not need to fire a good provider to add better strategy.

The short answer

An MSP is built to deliver and support technology services. A fractional CIO is built to own the business-level technology agenda: priorities, risk, vendors, budget, sequencing, and leadership communication. Both roles matter. They should not be the same role when the company needs objective advice.

Why the distinction matters

When the same organization proposes the work, recommends the product, and grades the outcome, leadership has no independent way to test whether the sequence serves the business. That does not mean the provider is untrustworthy. It means the company needs someone whose job is to ask a different set of questions.

Make vendor meetings useful

I translate business goals into clear expectations, review proposals, ask the questions that are usually skipped, and keep scope from growing before the business case is sound.

Turn tickets into priorities

Your provider can see the work. I make sure leadership can see why the work matters, what it costs, and what should be delayed or stopped.

Keep the relationship honest

Good providers usually welcome clear ownership and better decisions. If the relationship is not serving the company, you get evidence before you make a change.

When a fractional CIO is worth adding

Consider a fractional CIO when technology spend has become material, a major project is approaching, security or insurance requirements are escalating, or the owner is still the default escalation point for every technology decision. A fractional CIO can work alongside an internal IT lead, MSP, or mixed team; the goal is not to replace capability. It is to make the capability point in the same direction.

How I work with your MSP

I begin by understanding the current relationship and the business priorities. Then I establish a clear roadmap, decision cadence, and review rhythm. Your MSP continues doing the hands-on work it is hired to do. I give leadership a way to evaluate whether that work is the right work, on the right timeline, for the right price.

Fractional CIO and MSP questions

Do you replace our current MSP?

No. Most engagements start by making the existing provider more effective through clearer priorities and accountability. If a replacement is warranted, the evidence should make that clear.

Will our MSP see you as a threat?

A mature provider usually prefers a client with clear decisions, defined priorities, and a practical executive counterpart. The work becomes more focused, not more political.

Can a small company use both?

Yes. A growing business can use an MSP for delivery and a fractional CIO for leadership without carrying the cost of a full-time executive.

Keep the team. Add the missing level of judgment.
